Top Cat: The Movie – Yip, Top Cat is Back!

Top Cat – that’s TC to his intellectual close friends – is back! And I was able to introduce him and his pals to the Tinkerous Toddler at an advanced screening in Leicester Square on Sunday.

For me it was a happy trip down memory lane. For the Tinkerous Toddler, it was a chance to get her face painted, don a pair of cool 3-D glasses and sit back in the comfort of a massive West End cinema seat to allow a bunch of Wise-Guy NYC cats entertain her for an hour or so.

Other than a gentle make-over, the gang look the same as they ever did – which is a nice touch; there’s nothing worse than iconic cartoon characters of yesteryear being rocketed into the 21st century with the editing suite equivalent of Botox and fillers.

The storyline is really well done. It melds classic Top Cat antics with the here and now as TC, Benny the Ball, Fancy Fancy, Choo Choo, Spook and Brains take on an evil baddy, in the shape of Police Chief Strickland, and his force of bullying robot police officers. Yes, that’s right, Officer Dibble gets sidelined for a bunch of robots. But don’t worry; Dibble still gets plenty of screen time.

There are laugh out loud moments for adults and children alike, always the sign of a well thought out children’s movie in my book. The Tinkerous Toddler, who is not yet 2 and a half, sat through the entire movie, happily munching on popcorn and joining in with the on-screen banter when the mood took her.

I would happily recommend this as a movie for families of all ages. As a staunch childhood fan of Top Cat, this movie could easily have been a disappointment for me. But it wasn’t, Top Cat and his gang have a new fan in the Tinkerous Toddler and it left us both feline really happy. Sorry, couldn’t resist ending on a pun.

Top Cat: The Movie will be released in 2-D and 3-D on 1st June 2012.

Review

Disclosure:

The Tinkerous Toddler and I were invited to review Top Cat: The Movie at a West End Screening. We did not pay for tickets. I was  not paid to attend or to post my review. All thoughts are my honest opinion of the movie.

I’m sorry but this was a complete failure of a movie. I grew up with Top Cat yet the animation was terrible, the plot boring and modern tech was awkwardly thrown in there to make it seem “relevant”. At the screening every child looked bored and fed up. I don’t know what Top Cat movie you saw but it sure as hell mustn’t of been the one I saw with robot cops.

      Hello Tom

Thanks for stopping by to leave your opinion, you clearly feel very strongly about Top Cat. The review is my opinion, based on the experience that my daughter and I had. If you were at the same screening as we were, then not every child looked bored and fed up, as both my toddler and her little friend had a fine old time.

I hope that in time you find a way to get over the ordeal that you seem to have endured. Best wishes.
