Tribes by Seth Godin
Tribes by Seth Godin is a book I came across on my journey from SAHM to WAHM. In case you aren’t aware of Seth Godin, he’s a U.S based marketing guru. His book, Tribes – We Need You To Lead Us – is about leadership, community and the power to change the status quo. It isn’t a ‘how to’ book and it isn’t a self-help book. It is a book that inspires the reader to become a leadership figure and find their tribe.
I wasn’t even thinking about becoming a leader when I downloaded Tribes to my Kindle. I was doing a project that involved reaching out to different online tribes. ‘Tribes’ being a bit of buzz word in the digital marketing world at the moment. But what I’ve taken from Tribes is the mindset I need to start and succeed with my new business venture; if I want my business to take off, I need to lead in order for others to follow.
Not rocket science perhaps, I am sure at least one person reading this will be thinking “no shit Sherlock”. But it’s a very simple, yet powerful mindset to have and one that is giving me great focus whilst planning both the business and the marketing of it. So I highly recommend this book as one of the essential building blocks for anyone wanting to set up on their own in business.
You can visit Seth’s blog to find out more about Tribes by Seth Godin and also imbibe a whole lot of mega useful thoughts and opinions from one of the world’s finest marketing gurus.
If you want to see Seth talking on the subject of Tribes, then check out Seth’s Ted Talk where he argues that the internet has put an end to mass marketing and instead put the focus on the human social units known as tribes. In this Ted Talk Seth defines tribes as being founded on shared ideas and values. He believes that tribes give ordinary people the power to lead and instigate big change.
